Florida is a popular destination known for its sunny beaches and theme parks. But you are here for the state income tax (or lack of it). Here’s a breakdown of how your Florida paycheck works.

Like every other state, your earnings in Florida are subject to federal taxes. Your employer will withhold money from each paycheck to pay your federal income taxes. The amount withheld depends on your income, filing status, and the number of allowances you claim on your W-4 form. The W-4 form has recently been updated to reflect changes in tax laws, so make sure you fill it out accurately to avoid overpaying or underpaying your taxes.

In addition to federal taxes, your paycheck will also have deductions for FICA taxes. These taxes fund Social Security and Medicare, which you will benefit from in your retirement years. Your employer will withhold 6.2% of your earnings for Social Security, and for Medicare, 1.45%. Your employer will match these contributions, and any earnings over $200,000 are subject to an additional 0.9% Medicare tax.

Your employer may also deduct money for employee benefits, such as health, life, or disability insurance. If you participate in a 401(k) retirement plan, your contributions will count as pre-deductions. These contributions will lower your taxable income and reduce the income tax you owe.

Additional deductions may be taken from your Florida paycheck for items such as child support, wage garnishments, or retirement contributions.

It’s essential to understand the difference between pre-tax and post-tax deductions. Pre-tax deductions, like contributions to a 401(k), are deducted from your paycheck before taxes are taken out.       Gross income × Federal payroll tax rate = Federal payroll tax liability
  3. Figure out your net pay
    You need to account for any other deductions such as health insurance, 401(k) contribution, as well as additional withholdings.
    Gross income − (Total income tax liability + Total payroll tax liability + Total pre-tax deductions + Total post-tax deductions + Total withholdings) = Your net pay
  4. Divide your net pay by your pay frequency
